Appraisal

This modest but appealing small-scale house, dating to the start of the twentieth century, retains much of its early form and character despite some alterations. Its integrity is enhanced by the retention of the natural slate roof, and while the window and door fittings have been replaced the modern fittings are in keeping with the style of the building. The bare minimum of decorative interest is added by the exposed after ends. The form of this building is reminiscent of many contemporary houses that were built in the outskirts of many small Irish towns and villages at the very end of the nineteenth century and into the twentieth century by the local authorities etc., which suggests that this building may have been built as part of this nationwide programme. However, such houses were usually built in groups while this building is the only building of its type to the west end of Rathmullan. This simple building makes a positive contribution to the west end of Rathmullan, and is a modest addition to the built heritage of the local area.
