Rubble stone sluice set into recess in flood defence embankment, built c. 1850, flanked by rubble stone buttresses. Rubble stone parapet built to courses over ashlar stone lintel with cut stone arch of sluice; timber door hung on strap-iron hinges. Set to north of flood defence embankment with additional sluices and flood gates to west.
A finely crafted sluice gate built as part of land reclamation, designed to let water from the fields to the south out into the mud flats of Lough Swilly. This piece of engineering heritage shows the skill of the workmanship and the immense effort required to build the embankments to drain the slob lands.
