Freestanding cast-iron water hydrant, installed c.1890, having moulded base and fluted shaft with raised lettering 'Glenfield & Kennedy Ltd Kilmarnock', moulded neck with lion's-head spout, fluted domed cap with replacement tap handle, and acorn finial. Set at roadside adjacent to rendered building and ferry terminal.
This hydrant is an elegant piece of street furniture of artistic merit, with fine casting to the lion mask and acorn finial. It is also of technical merit as an example of mass-produced cast-iron ware and of interest as a reminder of a time before mains water supply.
