Detached four-bay single-storey national school, dated 1899, with recent glazed extension to southeast end. Pitched slate roof with overhanging eaves and exposed rafters, rendered chimneystack, replacement gutters, cast-iron downpipes and recent roof-lights to rear. Rendered walls with raised rendered plinth, and with metal vent to gable wall. Square-headed openings with timber battened door and six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows with painted stone sills. Plaque inscribed "MEENAVALLEY [sic]/NATIONAL SCHOOL/1899". Set at roadside. Recent outbuildings to rear, and rubble stone boundary wall to front with rendered coping and square-plan rendered piers.
This attractive national school is of architectural and social significance. It is located prominently on the road to Ard an Rátha [Ardara]. Despite a recent addition it has retained its original character and is enhanced by the retention of timber sash windows and the date plaque. The boundary walls contribute to the setting. The building is a good and relatively intact example of its type and date.
