Freestanding entrance gateway to Church of Ireland church and graveyard, built 1858-60, and designed by Joseph Welland. Comprises four square-plan ashlar sandstone piers, two inner to vehicular gateway and two outer, linked by quadrant walls. Piers have moulded plinths and entablature and stepped caps topped with ornate lamp holders. Double-leaf wrought-iron gates and similar railings, latter atop squared rubble limestone walls with chamfered sandstone plinths and copings. Similar pedestrian gate to northern outer pier fixed on other side to cut sandstone walling topped with similar railing. Southern outer pier connects to rubble limestone boundary wall of churchyard.
The ornate carved sandstone piers to this gateway demonstrate a high level of masonry skill and finesse. The bespoke standard of attention paid to detail and craftsmanship reflects the high level of patronage from the local landlord who funded this church and graveyard and other buildings in the town.
