Freestanding cast-iron water pump, erected c.1890. Round-plan banded shaft with fluted domed cap with pointed finial, spout with foliate neck and ram's head bucket hook, and curved cow's tail handle. Maker's mark to shaft. Set in concrete with concrete piers to either side, near road junction.
Water pumps such as this one served an important social function in rural areas, and were often sited at crossroads or junctions to aid access to drinking water. The utilitarian nature of the pump is enhanced by the decorative finish, with fluting and banding enhancing its form, and a decorative knob on the spout designed to hold a bucket handle. The long handle provides leverage, as well as having a pleasingly elegant curve.
