Description

Freestanding cast-iron water pump, erected c.1920, with domed head, spout with bucket grip, maker's mark to shaft, and curved pumping arm. Rubble stone wall to rear. Located on east side of main road through Donaghmoyne village and opposite former post office.

Appraisal

Water pumps once played an important social and functional role in Ireland providing a communal water source. Located in Donaghmoyne village it was a critical focal point within the surrounding rural hinterland, and serves as a reminder of this today. Unlike post boxes which were commissioned centrally, pumps can provide interesting examples of local ironwork, like this one, manufactured by Gaskin Brothers of Park Street, Dundalk. The curved handle enlivens this functional object.
