Description
Single-span bascule bridge over canal dock, installed 1939-41. Now fixed. Sited spanning Spencer Dock with pair of reclaimed rope twist-detailed cut-limestone panels ("1873").
Appraisal
A bascule bridge installed at a 'cost [of] £18,000...a structure unique of its kind in these islands' (The Irish Times 17th October 1941) representing an important component of the civil engineering heritage of Dublin: meanwhile, a pair of reclaimed panels carrying the emblem of the Midland Great Western Railway of Ireland remember the earlier James Price (1831-95)-designed Spencer Swivel Bridge (1873) which itself was pioneering as the first mechanical crossing over Spencer Dock (Irish Builder 1st April 1873, 89).
