Freestanding cast-iron post box, installed c.1905. Round on plan with shallow domed cap, moulded corona, neck moulding, cylindrical shaft and moulded plinth base. Curved hinged door facing south incorporating letter slot with raised frame below and raised royal insignia with crown motif. Insignia reads 'RE VII POST OFFICE'. Raised lettering to plinth base reads 'McDowall Steven & Co London & Glasgow'. Located to west side of Marlborough Street and set within original granite kerbing.
Located in front of an early terrace of houses just to the north of the Pro-Cathedral, this well-preserved example of an Edwardian post box is a remnant of the final decade of British rule in Ireland. Still in use, the post box is a very well made piece of street furniture that enhances the streetscape.
