Freestanding cast-iron pillar box, erected c.1880. Cylindrical cast-iron pillar box with flat-domed top and fluted collar. Shaft bears royal insignia of Queen Victoria 'VR'. Maker's inscription to base reads 'A. HANDYSIDE & CO. LTD. DERBY & LONDON'.
This appealing cast-iron artefact makes a subtle impression on the streetscape. Displaying a high standard of design and detailing, this remnant from the Victorian era continues to fulfil its function and is testimony to the robust quality of manufacture while adding interest to the streetscape and recalling the colonial era in Ireland.
