Appraisal

This well-proportioned gateway to the former Convent of the sisters of Charity forms a picturesque feature on the streetscape. The fine granite detailing to the arch surround and cross finial are testament to the skill and craftsmanship in stone working at the close of the nineteenth century and enhance the architectural design quality of the composition. The pointed arches and finial are in keeping with the Gothic Revival style of the former convent, placing this structure within an ecclesiastical context. The wrought-iron gates adds further interest and decorative appeal.
