Freestanding cast-iron water hydrant, erected c.1890, now disused. Comprising fluted domed cap and acorn finial, moulded neck with knob handle and lion's head spout, and fluted shaft on moulded base. Maker's insignia to shaft: ‘GLENFIELD / & KENNEDY/ KILMARNOCK’.
This water pump was erected to provide a communal source of drinking water to the workers at the Inchicore Works, and is of social significance. It is a good example of mass-produced functional cast-iron street furniture in the closing decades of the nineteenth century, and incorporates a high level of artistic detailing, as can be seen in the lion's head spout, making it an aesthetically-pleasing focal point in the complex. The works at Inchicore was established in 1846 to undertake the maintenance and construction of rolling stock to be used on the Great Southern & Western Railway.
