Single-arch bridge over canal, dated 1791. Granite ashlar walls with cut-granite stringcourses supporting parapets having cut-granite chamfered coping centred on inscribed oval plaques ("1791"). Single elliptical arch with granite ashlar voussoirs. Sited spanning Grand Canal with overgrown towpath to canal.
A bridge forming part of the significant infrastructure of the Grand Canal: the Grand Canal and the Royal Canal encircle the city centre of Dublin and provide a navigable route between the River Liffey and the River Shannon. The bridge shows evidence of skilled masons in its crisp stone work. Its date of construction is carried on two plaques as is the name of John Macartney (1747-1812) who was Chairman of the Grand Canal Company and who was later knighted 'in consequence of his energetic exertions in the promotion of the inland navigation of Ireland' (1796).
