Description

Gateway, extant 1837, on a symmetrical plan comprising pair of granite ashlar piers on moulded plinths having cornices on fluted friezes on monolithic stringcourses below gadrooned capping supporting cast-iron double gates with granite ashlar outer piers on cut-granite plinths having cut-granite stepped capping.  Road fronted at entrance to grounds of Johnstown House.

Appraisal

A gateway making a pleasing visual statement at the entrance on to the grounds of the Johnstown House estate.  NOTE: The gateway is likely a relic of the original Johnstown House described (1810) as 'the seat of Major Armstrong…a good house [in] a demesne of fourteen acres, well improved, good gardens handsomely laid out, and in fine order' (Deighan 1810, 192).
