Built Heritage Investment Scheme 2025

14 February 2025

Christopher O’Sullivan TD, Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity, has announced that 651 built heritage projects are to benefit from €8.1m in funding for conservation-led repairs under the Built Heritage Investment Scheme 2025.

The Built Heritage Investment Scheme will support custodians and owners of protected structures, and structures within Architectural Conservation Areas, in the care and repair of their heritage properties while at the same time developing and enhancing traditional building skills.  Through grants of up to €50,000, the Built Heritage Investment Scheme will be used for the conservation-led repair of brick and stone work, shopfronts and windows, rainwater goods and roofs.  The offers of funding under the Built Heritage Investment Scheme will be used to repair a wide range of heritage properties, from modest houses to landmark public buildings, including:

  • Saint Peter’s Church, Castletownbere, County Cork, where €18,562 has been offered for repairs to enable the adaptive reuse of the church as a community events centre;
  • Glandore House, Monkstown, County Dublin, a Ruskinian Gothic suburban villa designed by Deane and Woodward where €28,000 has been offered for the conservation and repair of its multi-chimneyed and multi-dormered roof;
  • Drumlease Church, Dromahair, County Leitrim, where €50,000 has been offered for the repair of its roof;
  • Saint Munis’s Church, Forgney, County Longford, where €8,500 has been offered for the conservation and repair of a stained glass window commemorating Oliver Goldsmith (1728-74);
  • Grehan, Boyle, County Roscommon, where €26,000 has been offered for the conservation of an historic shopfront;
  • 21A Thomas Street, Waterford, where €2,500 has been offered for the conservation-led repair of late nineteenth-century timber sash windows;
  • Saint Mogue’s Cottage, Ferns, County Wexford, where €44,000 has been offered for the repair of its thatched roof.

€1.25m of the €8.1m in funding will be allocated to thatched houses with €650,000 awarded from the Built Heritage Investment Scheme and €600,000 from the dedicated Historic Thatched Buildings Stream.

The heritage properties benefitting under the Historic Thatched Buildings Stream include a thatched house near Corrandulla, County Galway, which has been offered €17,500 in funding and Rose Cottage, Malin, County Donegal, which has been offered €14,000.

In addition to the funding provided under the Built Heritage Investment Scheme, custodians and owners will commit an estimated €29.5m towards the conservation-led repair of their heritage properties, making this a very significant investment in our built heritage and the traditional building skills which support it.
